Taroom is 485 kilometres north-west of Brisbane and is well known for the famous Leichhardt tree in the main street. Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt carved his initials in the bark on his journey in 1844. From the following year settlers droving flocks of sheep began moving to the area. Today Taroom is focused largely on cattle and grain production.

 

There are many attractions and areas of natural beauty. One of the most well known is the breathtaking beauty of Isla Gorge, where visitors can enjoy bush walking and native flora and fauna. There are a number of other national parks to explore.

 

Taroom offers visitors accommodation, supermarkets, well- stocked shops, and is an ideal fuel stop. There is a swimming pools an 18-hole golf course, lawn bowls, tennis, horse racing and polocrosse agricultural show, rodeo, campdrafting and fishing on the Dawson River.
